being iyeshuld is suffering
Please don't watch the Eyeshield 21 anime. I realize that there are people out there who prefer watching anime to reading manga and I'm cool with that. But if you're going to see this fictional team of football dorks, please see them in black and white.
I feel like the anime would be okay maybe for like elementary kids? Otherwise, it's got very low production values, especially if you're going to compared it to Haikyuu or Kuroba.
Like for HQ, I thought the anime did a fantastic job getting across the speed and the game and keeping it relatively realistic. In Kuroba, it didn't look like basketball but it looked hella cool. In IC21 the attacks look fake and they don't even look that impressive.
On top of that, I don't like the voice acting for IC21 as much as I did HQ or Kuroba. I love these characters okay. They have become my children. You have a duty to voice them with the best.
But the worse offense that the anime commits is that it re-orders the plot. And not even in a way that makes a lot of sense?? Just leave it. It was a beautiful story and I loved every grand moment of it STOP TOUCHING IT.

Honestly the only enjoyment I got from watching/fast-forwarding the anime's first season was just nostalgia.
Because HQ and Kuroba might win in terms of art. Slam Dunk's retro art even has a certain draw towards it. And while the IC21 manga has some rough patches in the beginning, it smooths out towards the end.
It might also be my initial bias against American football, but I also enjoyed the different aspects of volleyball or basketball better.
But what IC21 has going for it above all of these other series so far is character development. Granted, it also had the time to set up this development in 300 chapters. It's quite a bit of chapters, sometimes even giving me arc fatigue, especially towards the end of the Christmas Bowl arc (although like I said the Japan All-Star arc was way too short). But through those long arcs, we got to see an incredible coming of age story.
It's the kind of story that made me tear up when I saw Sena again in the anime. Because he's come so far through so much. I'm so proud of him and his entire team. From Hiruma who became more human than demon, to Kurita whose kindness gave him strength like a demon, to Musashi who was able to stand alongside his friends once more, to Monta who killed his idol and flew higher than the rest, to Taki who learned that he was ordinary but became all the stronger for it, to Yukimatsu who proved unequivocally that he was part of the team, to the Ha-Ha brothers who showed that they were more than what people thought of them, to Komusubi whose small back protected his teammates even in the face of fear, to Doburoku and Suzuna and Mamori who kept supporting their team through thick and thin, and even to the helpers from the other clubs who walked with these strangers to the national stage.
It's the kind of affection that comes from such an epic journey throughout 300 chapters and it's the kind that makes me talk about them endlessly even though this post was just supposed to be about the anime.

But....not enough affection to watch the entire anime. I'm allergic to QUALITY animation, sorry. Please, just read the manga.
