1. IT'S FUCKING AWESOME
I tried to do a clickbait article title but that kind of backfired on me.
Just kidding, there are actually a ton of reasons why you should watch One Punch Man. First of all, it's FUCKING AWESOME.
Second of all, the original manga (based off the original webcomic) is FUCKING AWESOME.
I've been so pumped for this anime ever since it was announced because the manga is so good but it's also really slow on the updates so I'm hoping the anime will get further in the plot. Plus its drawn by Yusuke Murata, the brilliant artist who also did Eyeshield 21. In One Punch Man, he really goes wild with experimentation and detailed art styles and the anime keeps the same kind of artistic license.
Third of all, the animation is FUCKING AWESOME.
Holy shit I loved the opening which is just blood pumping rock and roll and a ton of fucking wild ass monsters and the hero being all epic and the details are everywhere. Then to perfectly illustrate the kind of series this is, the ending tones it down way hard almost like someone accidentally spliced the wrong ending from a slice of life anime. Except the art quality for both, although in completely different styles, is amazingly high.
Fourth of all, the hero, Saitama is FUCKING AWESOME.
He has one of the best character introductions of all time, and it's honestly even better in the manga version because he shows up being surrounded by the most fucking detailed art and this steroid DBZ villain going berserk and he just has a FUCKING CIRCLE FOR A HEAD.
Then this fucking circle with two eyes takes out this villain, this destroyer class villain who in any other shounen anime probably would have at least one episode dedicated to him as the Monster of the Week, with one punch. That's right, three minutes into the first episode...ROLL CREDITS.
Then it goes into a flashback of three years later and this properly animated, non-bald guy shows up and you think 'oh shit time for the backstory of how he got this awesome power!'
And as you go along you're nodding going 'yes he found his true calling, he saved an innocent kid, he triumphed over evil -'
AND THAT'S ALL THE EXPLANATION YOU'RE GONNA FUCKING GET BYE.
And so the fifth reason, One Punch Man is a FUCKING AWESOME parody of the superhero genre, especially the super sentai style of shows that ruled the 80s and 90s. We're talking Power Rangers, Kamen Riders, monsters straight out of Godzilla and officially, Anpanman. It mocks those roving bands of superheroes by putting them in a bureaucracy and having them trying to pay bills. It mocks every Monster of the Week by having a guy who can literally take them out in one punch.
But best of all, it keeps all that up by having a balance of both playing it straight and the parodied tropes. You've got sequences of super stylized action, I'm talking transforming lineart, crazy choreography, badass effects and Saitama being transformed into a war buddha, victorious in battle. And then you have parts where he's a bald guy shopping for groceries.
The series also has a cast of other superheroes who get plenty of screentime and let's face it, without them the show would be over in 3 minutes. The supporting characters get the stereotypical superpowers and the tried and true struggles against supernatural forces trying to destroy the peace of Cities A - Z (they're literally named that). Don't worry, plenty of them also get in on the humorous parody while being totally awesome (Genos my cyborg nerd prince). And Saitama...gets his journey of enlightenment as he tries to find an enemy he can't defeat, searching for an answer to the age old question: where does a man go after achieving nirvana?
The answer may surprise you!
(Or it might not. I don't actually know.)
