TOKYO MEW MEW :3Tokyo mew mew is like Sailor Moon, Mermaid Melody,Cardcaptor Sakura and cats rolled all together. It's a magical girl genre and even now I think it's cute and bubbly. Plus watching a magical girl series has a stress free advantage: you're guaranteed a happy ending. My first question for this show, and indeed, the entire genre, is: Why do all super heroines oversleep? Is there not a case where the girl, unmagical for now, wakes up gasping at the super 'kawaii' alarm clock? Maybe. My second question is: Why is it that the super heroine always gets costumes? Does the magic automatically turn out a super 'kawaii' battle costume perfectly fitted for o ur heroine? Tokyo Mew Mew puzzles me the most on this point. Just because you were injected with the DNA of an endangered cat, doesn't mean the DNA will include a fluffy pink dress. I could go on and on about how weird, and unrealistic that is but I don't like the kind of people that go on. To those kind of people I usually give the answer: It's anime. Anything and everything can happen in anime. So there. I just answered my own rant.
It's like Sailor Moon in that there's multiple members with their own unique powers. They're all named after foods. Ichigo (strawberry) is infused with the DNA of an Iriomote Wildcat and she has the Strawberry Bell. Mint has the DNA of a Blue Lorikeet, and she uses the Mint Arrow. The Finless Porpoise is Lettuce's animal, and the Lettuce castanet or t anet. Mew Pudding uses the Pudding Ring, being combined with the Golden Lion Tamarin. The last Mew Mew to be discovered, Zakuro has the powers of a Gray Wolf. She uses Zakuro's Whip. I was totally convinced that it was like CCS because I found out that Ichigo's crush, Masaya, had the same seiryu as Yukito/Yue from CCS! Coincid ence? I think not. Plus, Ichigo's hair is almost exactly like Sakura's and running late is a common trait in both of them.
There's often confusion about the attack names. For example, Zakuro's attack can be heard as either Zakuro Spear or Zakuro's Pure. In the english manga, they use 'Ribbon Zakuro's Pure' but in the fansubs, the subtitle usually says 'Ribbon Zakuro Spear." The 'ribbon' part of the attack can also be spelt as Reborn. Sometimes I wish they didn't use so many english words with Japanese accents...>.>
I re ally like the general concept of this show nya~! Infusing cute girls with endangered, or 'Red Data', animals is just so cool! I'd love to be infused with a cat or a wolf. (Although the Grey Wolf isn't a Red Data animal anymore. ^.^ yayzorz! But does that mean Zakuro's power is gone?) It's also interesting how usually the guy with lots of fangirls finds one who's not a fan or the girl finds someone without a bunch of fangirls, but Ichigo is just as crazy about Masaya as the rest of his fans. The animation quality is less con sistent than I would have liked though...Sometimes it's really clear but sometimes the faces look really screwed up. Usually animes do have that kind of problem from time to time but it's the first time it's annoyed me so much though.
Actually, I find Cardcaptor Sakura of a better quality than Tokyo Mew Mew in terms of anime but I do like Tokyo Mew Mew's manga. It also has a sequel called Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode where the original Mews all but disappear from t he story. It's also kinda hard for me because I watch Bleach as well and both Ichigos are just so different its funny xP Other than the painful, continuous loops of transformations/metamorphas-is and the poses they strike each time, I think Tokyo Mew Mew is a very good example of a nice magical girl show. I have a feeling that if I was a few years younger, I'd be totally crazy over this show.
