| Aww look at those smiling faces - ITS A FUCKING LIE |
In some ways it was worse than Immortal Rain, because it didn't even give an indication of how heart crushing its ending was going to be. I mean, with Immortal Rain, it had that poetic language, the questions of living forever and so on. But Chrono Crusade was one of those nice mixes of romance and adventure, fighting monsters while blushing along the way. You have the brash but talented and energetic Rosette and the mature but powerful demon Chrono, and they collect the white mage Azmaria and the rich girl Satella to make a merry band of adventurers. So it had that kind of happy upbeat shounen/shoujo promise and faith in the future. Which the ending totally crushed along with all my feels.
Rosette and Chrono are under a contract where Chrono uses up her soul when he uses his powers. But you think 'I'm sure they'll find a way around it, like him becoming human or getting back his horns and hand waving it in that simple but happy ending kind of way'. The four nakama take a photo together and the manga voiceover says it's the first and last photo they took. But you think 'I'm sure that's just a technicality and they just chose not to take photos or whatever in the future'. Satella ends up staying behind and fighting her sister and dying together in a suicide attack. But you think 'I'm sure both of them will make it out fine and there will be tears of joy as the nakama reunite'. BUT YOU'D BE WRONG.
Rosette dies at a young age because her soul wasn't revitalized. Chrono comes back from Pandemonium in time to have Rosette die in his arms a second time. Satella doesn't come back until nearly a century later. Fiore is never reunited with Joshua, and even though she comes back at the same time as Satella she chooses not to see her again. Azmaria grows old without her friends, and records a last message to Satella because she knows they won't be able to take another photo together.
I - wha - why - w - just what is this shit?
Rosette who was always running for the sake of her loved ones, she only managed to see Chrono in her final moments. Chrono who lost someone precious already, who was separated from both his old family and his new, to come back only to watch the girl he loved die again. The promise they made to be together through good times and bad, what happened to that?
That photo of the four of them, in love, smiling, running towards the future and the happiest they've ever been, that time never came again.
Fuck you. Where's the 'rip your heart out and sautee it with your tears' tag?
